Financing Grain Storage, Drying and Handling

How bins, dryers, legs and handling systems get financed, how to build the case for on-farm storage, and the full-project costs owners underestimate.

On-farm storage changes your operation's economics: it buys marketing flexibility and cuts harvest-time bottlenecks. It's also a construction project with costs well beyond the bin itself, and financing it well means pricing the whole thing.

Build the case in numbers

Storage is usually justified by a combination of things: avoiding harvest-delivery price discounts, marketing on your own schedule, reducing custom hauling and wait time, and harvesting at higher moisture with drying capacity. Put your own figures against each — bushels, current elevator arrangements, hauling costs, typical basis. A lender evaluating a six-figure project wants the arithmetic, and honestly so do you.

Price the whole project

  • Bin, dryer and handling equipment
  • Concrete, site prep, drainage and access
  • Electrical service upgrades — frequently the biggest surprise
  • Permits, engineering and installation labor
  • Aeration, monitoring and safety equipment

Because part of this is equipment and part becomes a permanent improvement, the financing may be structured differently across components — see irrigation and farm infrastructure for how that split usually works.

Match the term to the asset

Storage structures last decades; a dryer's working life is shorter. Financing a long-lived structure over a short term puts unnecessary pressure on cash flow, and financing short-lived equipment over a very long term means paying for something after it's gone. Lease vs buy covers the same logic for equipment generally.

Storage interacts with your operating line

Holding crop instead of selling at harvest delays the revenue that repays your operating line. If storage is part of a marketing strategy, work the timing out with your lender before harvest, not after. See seasonal crop cash flow.
