Heavy Equipment Financing: What Lenders Check Before They Fund a Machine
How excavators, loaders, cranes and other heavy machines get financed — collateral value, hours, attachments, and the difference between dealer and auction purchases.
Heavy equipment deals are underwritten around the machine. Two businesses with identical financials can get very different answers on the same purchase, because the machines aren't equally easy to value or resell. Knowing what a lender studies lets you prepare the file instead of hoping.
Hours matter more than years
For most heavy machines, hour meter readings tell the story that odometers tell on trucks. A ten-year-old machine with low hours and a service record can read better than a newer unit that's been run hard. Bring the hours, the maintenance history, and any recent major component work — engine, undercarriage, hydraulics.
Where you buy changes the file
- Dealer purchases are usually simplest — clear invoicing, serial numbers, sometimes warranty coverage.
- Private party needs more proof: ownership, condition, and an agreed price that's defensible.
- Auction can be the hardest to finance on short notice, because the purchase has to be evaluated fast and sight-unseen valuations are conservative.
Attachments and add-ons are worth listing separately. Buckets, thumbs, hammers and specialty attachments have their own value, and lumping them into one price makes the collateral picture harder to read.
Your side of the equation
Time in business, revenue consistency and existing debt still matter — see the qualifying guide for how lenders read each. What's specific to equipment is that the purpose is concrete: you're buying something that produces revenue. If you can show the work the machine is tied to — a contract, a recurring customer, a backlog — say so. It answers the cash-flow question directly.

New vs used
Used units are financed every day, but the terms available narrow as age and hours climb. Financing used equipment covers what shifts. If you're weighing ownership against renting or leasing the same machine, lease vs buy lays out the trade-offs honestly.
