How Much Can My Business Borrow? How Lenders Size a Request

How lenders arrive at an amount — cash flow capacity, collateral, revenue multiples by product type — and how to size your own request credibly.

There's no formula that turns your revenue into a borrowing limit, which is why articles promising one aren't useful. What does exist is a set of tests lenders apply. Understanding them lets you size a request that holds up instead of one that gets countered or declined.

Test 1: can the cash flow carry the payment?

This is the primary constraint on most requests. A lender looks at what the business reliably produces after operating costs and existing debt payments, then asks whether there's comfortable room for another payment — with a cushion, not to the dollar. If existing obligations already consume your free cash flow, the answer is small regardless of revenue.

Test 2: what's behind it?

Collateral-backed requests are sized against the asset. Equipment financing is limited by the equipment's value; property lending by the appraisal; invoice financing by the invoices themselves. That's why an equipment purchase can sometimes be approved at an amount an unsecured request couldn't reach.

Test 3: does the product itself have limits?

Each product type has its own typical sizing logic — some relative to monthly revenue, some to asset value, some capped by program rules. Those ranges shift by lender and over time, which is exactly why a single number can't be quoted honestly here.

How to size your own request

  • Start from the need, not from a round number — what specifically are you buying or covering?
  • Price it fully: equipment plus installation, inventory plus freight, project plus contingency
  • Calculate what the payment would be and test it against your worst recent month
  • Ask for that amount, and explain the arithmetic
