Medical and Dental Practice Financing: Equipment, Build-Outs and Buy-Ins
How practices finance chairs, imaging and operatories, what changes when you're buying into or acquiring a practice, and how insurance receivables factor in.
Healthcare practices generally sit on the favorable side of lender industry policy — the revenue is recurring, the licensing is verified, and the equipment holds value. That doesn't make every request simple, but it does mean the industry question is rarely the obstacle.
Equipment and operatories
Chairs, imaging systems, lasers, sterilization and practice-management systems are financed as collateral-backed purchases. Where practices get caught is the difference between equipment cost and project cost: plumbing, electrical, cabinetry and permits for a new operatory can rival the equipment itself. Price the whole project before deciding what to ask for.
Buying in or buying out
Acquiring a practice, or buying into a partnership, is a different transaction than buying equipment — it's an acquisition, evaluated on the practice's own financials, patient base, and the terms of the purchase. Buying an existing business covers what lenders examine, and SBA loan basics covers the program often used for these.
Insurance receivables
Practices paid by insurers carry a built-in delay between service and payment. That's a timing problem, not a profitability problem, and it's addressed with working-capital products rather than a term loan — see financing for cash-flow gaps.
